Bunnies | Summer 2024
This year, Anna continued to persistently ask if we can get a horse. A pony. A puppy. An indoor dog. A lap dog. Another pet... a new best friend. A lovable creature who needs her. A fluffy thing to snuggle. Something to train. Something to spoil. Something to love.
Plllleeeeeeeeeeeese? Day after day, she persists with prayers of an animal in need to appear on the foot of her bed.
This summer, instead of taking a week at camp, she chose to learn to ride horse at a friend's farm. She had weekly one-hour lessons for the duration of summer. It was a delight to watch her cherish each moment with the large animals. She befriended them, and learned to care for them in addition to learning to ride. She'd like to continue on with lessons again soon. After a few months of riding, she continued to be convicted with the desire for another pet. And, decided if it can't be a horse, can it be a rabbit? So she asked and after some consideration, we declared she could get a rabbit. That was the right size critter to care for.
What joy!
We began the search for a bunny. Checked out every book and more from the library regarding the care and keeping of hares. We had about 12 at a time. Breeds, Encyclopedias, Storey's guides, storybooks, building a hutch, raising Rabbits for Fur, Meat, etc... Just to learn. She realized she could get a small breed like her dad's suggested Nederland Dwarf, if it came up. So, we looked, and there weren't any right off. BUT, at horse lessons one day, her trainer told her that a friend has a litter of Mini-Rex-Mix Bunnies, and they needed a home. They'd be ready in a few weeks.
We called, and they have a few, Titus overheard and asked if he could have one too. Tim answered "yes" right away. So exciting!
In August, we brought home 2 sweet bunnies. They are a mini-Rex mix breed of rabbits. The white one is Arctic, and the dark one is Benny, as in Potter's dearly-loved Benjamin Bunny.
